This work belongs to the series Heroes y Villanos. Chairman Mao is a villain in the series. The west familiarized itself with the portrait of Mao in the mid 80's after Andy Warhols famous portrait. The image was granted iconic status in the arts more than any transcendence in the political realm. It is not widely known that in 1950 when Mao rose to power, his policy regarding art was to censure, prohibit and destroy traditional and western art in China. All creative artistic expressions where limited to serving the communist party and any form of individual expression was banned. In my opinion this is crime which can't be measured, it equates to cultural genocide. I consider an unpardonable mistake that the western world gives the image iconic status to someone who destroyed and censured preexisting art and limited any form of free artistic expression.
It is an homage to Yvaral due to the fact that the technique used to create the piece stems from process and experimentation by Yvaral in the 60's. Victor Vasarely was Yvaral's father the father of the cinetic or Op art movement in France during the 60's. Yvaral experimented with the ways of using and applying the purely abstract principles of cinetic art to figuration. All the other artists of the movement where exclusively abstract. It was very interesting for me to see that the process of experimenting with these techniques yielded an image or portrait made with shadows. The protruding black structures create shadows with different levels of intensity depending on how much they protrude from the surface. The greater the protrusion the darker the shadow they project. By precisely controlling the distance the material protrudes from the background it is possible to control the intensity of the shadows they project and thus the quality of the final image. By defining 100 different levels the material protrudes from the background you achieve 100 different shadow intensities and thus a pallet of 100 shades of gray to create the image.
